Dispersa™ Launches Commercial Production of Upcycled Biosurfactants

Dispersa May 5, 2026

Montreal, Canada — [May 5, 2026] — Dispersa™, Canadian cleantech pioneer of waste-derived biosurfactants, has launched commercial deployment of PuraSurf™ M. This marks the first upcycled biosurfactant globally to reach commercial production, with active customer fulfillment and partnerships now underway across North America.

The company is now operational at their commercial production facility in North America and will be producing an annual output on track to reaching 100 metric tons per year. This marks a critical inflection point for the biosurfactant industry, where demand for high-performance, sustainable yet cost-effective alternatives continues to accelerate under regulatory and supply chain pressures.

Dispersa™’s PuraSurf™M, a sophorolipid, derived from locally sourced agri-food and non-consumer oil side streams, offering a circular alternative to conventional surfactants while reducing reliance on inputs from either palm, petroleum, and/or global food supply chain.  With regulatory clearances secured in both Canada and the United States, Dispersa is actively supplying customers and advancing additional commercial partnerships.

“This chapter represents a significant milestone in Dispersa’s commercialization journey,” said Nivatha Balendra, Founder and CEO of Dispersa™. “We are thrilled to demonstrate for the first time globally that upcycled biosurfactants can be produced commercially. Our focus remains on delivering consistent volumes and quality,  along with  supporting customers through market-ready formulation integration.”

Dispersa™ is currently servicing customers in the home care, industrial and institutional (HI&I) cleaning sector. The company is also expanding into adjacent markets this year,  integrating its materials into a broader range of applications.

While biosurfactants are positioned as a sustainable alternative, commercial adoption has long been limited by cost, scalability, and performance constraints. Dispersa™’s mission has always been to accelerate biosurfactant adoption by removing these market barriers. This commercial milestone cements their continued commitment to  demonstrate that upcycled surfactants can indeed move beyond initial stages into consistent, market-ready supply.
